Building off of last weeks performance, the Detroit Lions defeated the Denver Broncos 25-20 Saturday night at Invesco Field in Denver.
The Lions starters looked flawless on offense at times as they had another strong outing, the secondary however was still getting burned deep.
The Lions offense was explosive! Even though they settled for 3 field goals and only 1 touchdown while stalling inside the Denver 11 on all the field goals on Stafford’s 4 possessions under center, he is not to blame. There were two potential touchdowns the Lions did not capitalize on, Stafford threw two lasers into both of his tight ends (Brandon Pettigrew and Tony Scheffler) hands and they both dropped it, Hopefully they wont have brick oven hands for the regular season! Stafford had 13 completions in 18 attempts for 130 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.
The Detroit Lions are set to open their pre-season schedule Saturday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field (7:30 pm Eastern). While it’s unlikely that the first team will see more than 15-20 snaps, there is plenty to look forward to come Saturday night in Pittsburgh. Here are some things to watch closely as the Lions take the field tonight at Heinz Field:
First thing to keep your eye on tonight is the quarterback situation on both sides of the football. For the Steelers the big question is, who will start the game? Who will get the majority of the first team reps? Since Rothlisberger will be suspended the first 4-6 games of the regular season for getting rowdy in a bathroom stall, will it be Dennis Dixon or Byron Leftwhich?
On the other side of the field, the Lions don’t have that kind of problem. Stafford will be the starting quarterback tonight in Pittsburgh. Lions coach Jim Schwartz didn’t announce any plans in terms of how long the starters will play, but it’s likely that most “Superstar” players won’t play much beyond the first quarter while others could work well into the second quarter. While Stafford, who started 10 games last season, needs all the work he can get, he still falls under that superstar category for some reason. Although we all sip on that Honolulu blue kool-aid, and most of us like to think that Matt is one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Lets snap back to reality for a second and realize that the only thing he has is football IQ and a rocket as an arm. Stafford needs all the time he can get with the new and old receivers to work on his accuracy which was a problem his rookie year. Lets face it if he played in all 16 games last year he would of passed Peyton Manning’s INT record set when he was a rookie (32).

17,112 fans filled Ford Field on Saturday to watch the Detroit Lions’ annual public practice. It was a chance for fans to get autographs and pictures and allowed some of the new team members to explore Ford Field.
Fans “oohed” when receiver Tim Toone juked defensive back Jonathan Hefney for a long gain, and they “aahed” when Matthew Stafford connected on a bomb with Calvin Johnson. The play of the day came when Cornerback Chris Houston made a strong play when he broke up a long pass along the sideline from Stafford to Johnson. Schwartz said he would like to see Houston make more interceptions, but has liked his progression.
The best look of the day was from rookie running back Jahvid Best when he broke off a big run, and breakout linebacker Zack Follett laid the hit stick on running back Aaron Brown that brought gasps from the crowd, the pain train has arrived!!!
Another big play came when Wade delivered a big hit and jarred the ball out of Best’s hands. But Wade didn’t take all the credit. “That wasn’t me,” he said. “That was my other person. Right now I’m Jonathan. That’s a crazy guy that I become sometimes on Sundays that hit that guy. We look alike. I don’t even know if he has a name. He’s just like another crazy person. He’s related to (Louis) Delmas. Him and Delmas are really close relatives.”
There were plenty of Lions in uniform but not on the practice field, notably Louis Delmas and Deandre Levy.

Adam Schefter of ESPN first reported that the Lions and 2nd overall pick Ndamukong Suh reached an agreement on a five-year contract today. Although there’s still some contractual language that needs to be worked out, Jay Glazer of Fox reports that Suh will make $60 million over five years, with a maximum package of $68 million, and $40 million guaranteed. Stafford got $41 million guaranteed, so Suh didn’t get quite as much as the #1 overall pick in last years draft (is 1 million really a big difference once you pass 10?)

Best arrived after signing a five-year contract worth $9.8 million. “It was real important to me, just being on time and being with the rest of the team,” he said. “I was real anxious, it was hard for me to sleep last night. Quarterback Brett Favre offered up an interesting glimpse into his way of thinking in an interview with USA Today, saying that at the end of a long season he thinks he’s going to retire, but after a few months off he thinks he could play for another decade. Six months ago, Favre thought that he was done with football after the Vikings lost the NFC Championship game to the Saints.

One can only dream, right? Well in Madden 11, it is a reality. EA sports has released video of the virtual celebration for each team…. including your Detroit Lions. Although I think Detroit would party a lot harder than shown.
Here is the youtube video of Gus Johnson announcing the Detroit Lions winning SuperBowl 45……

The Detroit Lions signed free agent Dre Bly to a 2-year contract according to the Detroit News earlier today. Bly comes back to the organization, Dre has made two Pro Bowls with in the middle part of last decade. The 12-year veteran has played with four different organizations, including the 49ers last year. Detroit’s secondary remains very thin, but Bly’s play has declined rapidly. He shouldn’t be seen as a lock for the roster.
